DOWNLOAD -
This option allows transferring files from the BBS system
to your computer. There are a number of different methods of transferring
files which are fully explained in the menu choice
FILE TRANSFER HELP.
Following a request for download and entering a protocol you will be
prompted for the name of the file (or files) to be sent by the BBS.
When the BBS indicates it is "ready to send" you should begin your own
local transfer procedures using the same protocol selected when the
download was started.
You may download up to 50 files using internal batch protocols such as
Ymodem, or up to 7 using external batch protocols.
FILE TRANSFER HELP -
Presents a lengthy display file containing extensive
information on various file transfer protocols available, including
Xmodem, Ymodem, Zmodem, ASCII, and others. It can give you help on
what protocols are fastest, and which should be used in different
situations.
GOODBYE -
Disconnects you from the BBS and terminates your
connection.
HELP LEVEL -
Allows changing to EXPERT, REGULAR, or NOVICE
level. The NOVICE level is the default, and includes full menus and
complete explanation of your choices at every prompt. The REGULAR
level does away with the full menus, but includes a command line with
the menu name and available letter options. Other prompts are also
more abreviated. The EXPERT level does away with all menu choices and
simply indicates the menu title. Most other system prompts are
surpressed to the minimum required.
INFORMATION ON A SPECIFIC FILE -
This menu choice prompts you
for the name of a file available on the system. After entering the
filename you are shown additional info regarding the person who
uploaded the file, the last date it was accessed, whether a password is
required, and the remaining information from the file listing command.
LIST AVAILABLE FILES -
This is the menu choice used to view
the files available for download from the BBS. It presents a
sub-prompt asking which file areas should be listed. File areas may be
selected alone or in groups; selecting B;C;E will list only files in
areas B, C and E. Multiple letters may be delimited with the semicolon
(;) comma(,) or may be entered without any delimiter such as BCE.
MESSAGE MENU -
Presents the message menu, without traversing
through the main menu.
NEW FILES SINCE LAST [N] -
Displays a sub-prompt requesting
the date to use as a basis for the search. The default date is the last
time you used this particular option, not your last logon. A new user's
search date is always set to "01/01/80". You can logon for weeks, even
months, and providing the "N" option is not selected during a
particular logon, the default date will not be changed. In addition to
the automatic default date discussed above, you may manually enter any
date from which to start a new files search, allowing a display of all
files added since any date desired.
QUIT TO THE MAIN MENU -
Exits the FILE menu and returns to MAIN menu.
READ A TEXT FILE -
A sub-prompt requests the name of any
ASCII file listed in the file database. The selected text file is
displayed with appropriate screen pauses. Files which are obviously not
in ASCII format such as .COM, .EXE, .ARC, .ZIP etc. are accepted at the
sub-prompt, but a warning is issued that the file may be unreadable
when displayed.
STATISTICS -
Statistics presents you with a complete summary
of file information for both the system as well as your own file
database activity and limits. It includes number and size of uploads &
downloads for today and since your first call, as well as your limits
for your established security level.
TEXT SEARCH -
When this choice is selected you are prompted
for a series ofcharacters (string) to use as a search item. Prior to
beginning the search you are further prompted for the specific file areas
which should be subjected to the search. File areas may be entered
without spaces, or the + key may be entered to indicate a search of all
areas to which you have access. A search for the requested text is made
covering the FILENAME.EXT, complete 2 line description and the name of
the user who uploaded the file to the system. This search is not
case sensitive. The more characters entered the narrower the
search criterion. For example, entering "txt" would find
every occurrence of the characters "txt" in the file database, such
as "MYTXT.OVL", "README.TXT", or "YOUR-TXT.ZIP". This feature is a handy
way of locating those files uploaded by a particular user. Simply enter
a portion (or all) of a user's name at the prompt, and all of the files
uploaded by that user will be displayed.
UPLOAD -
You are prompted to:
1. Enter the transfer protocol and filename to be used.
2. Choose a file area in which to save the file, with a file
area listing available by typing "?" at the prompt;
3. Asked whether the file should be password protected. If a file is
password protected, another user must know the password in order to
download the file. This includes the system operator when calling from a
remote location. Used properly, this is a powerful option for
confidential file transfers between users.
4. Enter a description of the file contents. Again, you are responsible
to properly initiate the sending of the file on your end. Uploads using
external file transfer protocols are allowed, but are limited to one
file at a time.
VIEW A COMPRESSED FILE -
This selection is designed to allow viewing of a
compressed file saved in one of a number of formats such as .ARC,
.PAK, .ZIP, or .ZOO. You are prompted for a valid filename and the
contents of the compressed file are displayed.
